After a while, you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul,
And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning
And company doesn't mean security,
And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts
And presents aren't promises,
And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head up and your eyes open
With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child,
And you learn to build all your roads on today
Because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans.
And futures have a way of falling down in midflight.
After a while, you learn
That even sunshine burns if you get too much.
So plant your own garden and decorate your own soul,
Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure....
That you really are strong,
And you really do have worth.
And you learn....
With every good bye you learn.
In 1986 I came across this in Ann Landers column.I read it daily during my separation and divorce and it kept me moving forward on my new path. On this day, my 16th anniversary it still applies. I am on my own path, learning to meet my own emotional needs. With the words of my very wise friend on her blog site I continue to move in new directions in this complex Universe.

FEELINGS
Rejection and emotional hurts cause more pain and long lasting emotional pain that a broken bone.
The old saying of 'sticks and stones may break my bones, but words shall never harm me' is so untrue.
Certain situations or a thought can bring up the pain of rejections. It may be a look from an individual
or complete silence that cuts very deeply into the soul. The body aches and pains are many times the
feelings of rejection felt by the person being rejected. When children are bullied, it is the words of
their peers that can stay in the subconscious for a lifetime. Even though the bully has issues they
will probably bully others with their control even as adults. Parents can bully their children and not
even realize what was said was painful and make them feel unloved. It is now being proved by MRI's
that portions of the brain show the same response whether it is physical or emotional pain.
Life is hard, but it is still good.
